Girls — When is the Right Time to Visit a Gynecologist

Most girls fear their very first visit to a gynecologist — and why shouldn’t they? The thought of being completely undressed and examined by a stranger is less than welcoming. But now, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is making a recommendation for young girls to meet their future doctor earlier, between the ages of 13 and 15, and in a much more relaxed setting. There is usually no need for an examination at this time. However, since this is a period of rapid change and anticipation of new experiences for young women, this is the ideal time for health education. The gynecologist can be a wonderful resource and this first visit will focus on screening and prevention.

Topics of discussion can be tailored to the individual girl’s needs, but may include normal development, menstruation, sexuality, healthy eating habits, safety and injury prevention, contraception, date rape prevention, and emotional health. Now an often-dreaded issue of deciding when to schedule a first visit to the gynecologist has a logical answer, one with which both parents and daughters can feel comfortable.
