MRI Instructions

In most cases no special preparation is needed. You can eat your normal diet and take necessary medications. There are, however, some special restrictions with this exam. Because the MRI uses a strong magnetic field, items made with iron or steel will move. Please let your doctor know if you have:

  • A pacemaker
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Cochlear implants
  • A neuro-stimulator (Tens Unit)
  • Metal implants
  • Steel surgical staples or clips
  • An implanted drug infusion device

Also, if you are pregnant — let your doctor know.

Wearing clothing without zippers or metal buttons will enable you to wear your normal cloths during the exam, rather than change into our gowns and pajama bottoms. Please remove all piercings, necklaces, watches, chains, hair pins, barrettes, etc., before coming to your appointment.

We ask that you arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your appointment time in order to get checked in and complete paperwork. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for your exam.

  • The MRI exam usually causes no discomfort — in fact, there should be no pain or unusual feeling of any kind.
  • You may choose to bring someone with you to the exam, but they will need to wait for you outside the exam room.
