Post-Operative Instructions for Blepharoplasty

Cool compresses: 

Every hour for the first 12-24 hours.

  • Mix tap water with ice.
  • Soak 4x4 gauze in ice water. The gauze only needs to moist, not soaking wet.
  • Fold gauze in half, and apply one gauze over each eye.
  • These help to decrease swelling and bruising!

Activity:

  • Sleep with your head elevated on two pillows for at least 10 days.
  • No heavy lifting, exercise, or bending for 10 days. It is okay to take a walk.
  • No contact lens use for 10 days.

Take all medications as directed:

  • DO NOT take aspirin, motrin, advil, ibuprofen or any other similar pain relievers. These medications can cause bleeding! For pain, use the prescribed narcotic or Tylenol.
  • If your eyes feel dry, use artificial tears (Hypotears) during the day and Lacrilube ointment at night.

Facial care:

  • Use a bland cleanser (Dove, Ivory) for one week after surgery.
  • Do not rub eyelids.
  • Do not shower for two days. It is okay to take a bath.
  • Do not use the following products on your face one week before surgery. It is okay to restart the products one week after surgery if you have not had laser resurfacing: Retin-A (tretinoin), Retinol, Renova, and related products, Alpha hydroxyl acids, (AHA)-glycolic acid, Hydroquinone and other bleaching agents.

Notify Dr. TerKonda immediately for:

  • Decreased vision or blindness
  • Double vision
  • Increasing eye pain
  • Severe swelling or bruising
  • Severe dry eyes
  • Fevers above 101
