Laser Resurfacing of the Face — Instructions

PREOPERATIVE CARE

  1. An SPF 15-30 sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection (containing Titanium Dioxide or Parsal 1789) is to be applied every morning beginning two (2) weeks prior to the procedure.
  2. A pigment blocking, hydroquinone cream may be prescribed every morning beginning two (2) weeks prior to the procedure.
  3. Retin-A might be prescribed one (1) to two (2) times per day beginning two (2) weeks prior to the procedure.
  4. Valcyclovir, a medication to reduce the potential for cold sore (oral herpes) activation, is to be taken one (1) day prior to surgery. The dose is 500mg by mouth two (2) times a day for ten days.
  5. Duricef, an antibiotic to reduce the potential for a post-operative infection, is to be taken one (1) day prior to surgery. The dose is 500mg by mouth two (2) times per day for ten days.

INTRAOPERATIVE CARE

  1. You will have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery with the exception of Valcyclovir and Duricef. Please take these with a sip of water in the morning. Do not apply any creams or make up the morning of surgery.
  2. Protective eye shields may be placed directly on your eyes (similar to contact lens) for all laser surgery occurring around the eyes.
  3. A protective dressing or ointment will be placed over the entire treated area following laser surgery.
  4. You should wear a shirt with buttons and have a driver available at the surgery center to take you home. Please do not wear make-up or jewelry on the day of surgery.

You will return to the Longmont Clinic the morning following surgery for your first postoperative exam.
