Immunotherapy is a common treatment for allergies. It is the process in which a patient is made less sensitive to specific allergens such as: animal dander, dust, mold or pollens. Patients undergo allergy shots in which a prescription mixture of
allergens is injected directly under the skin on the upper arm. Over time, the
patient should notice a reduction in symptoms and sensitivity to these
allergens.
The Immunotherapy/Allergy Shot Clinic is open Monday through Friday:
Monday 8:30 - 4:30
Tuesday 8:00 - 11:30 and 1:30 - 5:30
Wednesday 8:30 - 11:30 and 1:30 - 4:30
Thursday 8:00 - 5:30
Friday 8:30 - 11:30 and 1:30 - 4:30
After an initial evaluation and allergy testing, patients are not required to have an appointment to receive regular injections. They are seen on a walk-in basis during open hours. Patients are asked to wait 30 minutes following allergy shots in case a rare systemic reaction would occur. A local reaction to an allergy shot is common and may look like a mosquito bite or itch. A systemic reaction, although it is rare, is very serious and requires urgent treatment. Contact a nurse immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Generalized flushing or hives
- Itching of the throat or face
- Asthmatic like
symptoms (wheezing or coughing)
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea or
diarrhea)
- CNS Symptoms (dizziness, headache, fainting)
