Fluoroscopy Instructions for Barium Enema/Large Intestine
In order to achieve the best quality radiographic images, you need to complete the following preparation prior to the study:
Day Before the Study:
1.) Please do not eat or drink any milk products
2.) You can have clear liquids only (all day). This includes the following:
-strained juices without pulp
-water
-broth or bouillon
-coffee or tea
-soft drinks
-Jell-O (no reds)
-popsicles
3.) Please follow the drinking instructions as written below. (This is very important for the exam):
8 a.m. - 5 p.m. You must drink 32 oz. of water
5:30 p.m. Drink the entire bottle of Magnesium Citrate. (The Magnesium Citrate will produce a bowel movement in 30 minutes to 6 hours)
Between 6p.m. and 7 p.m. drink 16 oz of water.
7:30 p.m. Take 2 Bisacodyl Tablets with 8 oz. of water
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT. (The exception would be patients with severe breathing problems or seizure medication, which can be taken before exam with a small amount of water.)
On Day of Exam:
You MUST check in 10 minutes prior to your appointed time. Due to tight scheduling, we cannot hold your appointment time if you are later than 15 minutes. Please call if you have any questions or need to make changes to your scheduled appointment. Thank you.
