- 5. Procedure times are scheduled; however, circumstantial delays, usually not exceeding 1 hour can occur.
- 6. You will be given a sedative to help you tolerate the examination with minimal discomfort. Examination times vary between 15-30 minutes. Recovery time before you are released to go home varies between 30 minutes to 1 hour. You will not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle for the rest of the day, so arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home. Taxi rides are not acceptable.
Preparation Schedule Avoid eating peas, corn, seeds, nuts and popcorn 3 days before your exam. If you are on Coumadin or aspirin products, please consult with your cardiologist regarding stopping these medications for five days before the exam. Tylenol may be used for headache or muscle ache.
Day before exam - 1. Have a normal breakfast. Then, begin a clear liquid diet, for example: Strained juices, tea, coffee, broth, non-red Jell-O, clear carbonated beverages, broth and water.
- 2. We recommend using a Fleet Enema prior to starting Colyte prep. If you choose to skip this and experience bloating, nausea, or vomiting you should take one.
- 3. Buy one or two fresh limes.
Mix Colyte with cool tap water Begin drinking Colyte between 4 and 6 p.m. Drink 8 oz. every 15 minutes until bottle is empty. Drink rapidly rather than sipping small amounts. If you should tire of the taste you may suck on a slice of lime between glasses. Bowel movements should begin when half the bottle is empty and continue 1-2 hours after the last glass. By this time, the stool should be clear yellow liquid.
Feelings of bloating/nausea are common due to the large volume of liquid ingested. This is temporary and should pass after the first few bowel movements. If you feel nauseated or vomit, stop drinking for 10-20 minutes or until the feeling passes and then resume drinking. Continue drinking clear liquids until midnight.
Day of the examination Do not eat anything. If thirsty, you may have a sip of water prior to the examination. You may also take your medications at this time if necessary.
