Instructions - Post Vasectomy

1. Go home, lie down and put an ice pack on the operative site. (Ice in a sandwich bag will work well) Wear an athletic supporter.

2. You may be up and around on the day following surgery, but avoid heavy lifting for 4 - 5 days and longer if this casues aching in the operative area.

3. Wear your athletic support during the day for 4-5 days following surgery. 

4. A small amount of bleeding from the surgical incision is common. Local pressure on the incision will control this amount of bleeding. 

5. If there is excessive bleeding, swelling, or pain, please call your doctor's office. 

6. Avoid alcoholic beverages on the day of the vasectomy. 

7. No sexual intercourse for 1 week. 


Instructions for the collection of semen specimen. 

We will need to see 2 semen specimens - 2 months and 3 months following the vasectomy. We can not determine the success of the operation until these have been examined.  Prior to collecting the specimen, please call the office to be sure we are available to examine the specimen.  The specimen should be collected in a clean glass jar by either masturbation or interruption of intercourse.  Do not use a condom.  We will need to examine the specimen within two hours of collection.  In the meantime, use another method of contraception until both specimens have been examined.  If for some unseen circumstance our schedule does not fit with your schedule and you ar unable to bring the specimen to our office, you may take the specimen to the Longmont Clinic laboratory. Please keep in mind if you do take the specimen to the lab there wil be a charge that you will be responsible for paying.
