Instructions for Prostate Ultrasound or Biopsy

Instructions preceding transrectal prostate ultrasound and/or biopsy

1. Take an antibiotic, as prescribed, the morning of the procedure

2. Take a regular Fleets enema at least 2 hours prior to the procedure.  
Fleets enema is a pre-packaged disposable product available in most drug stores. 

3. Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your scheduled exam time. 

4. Do not take any asprin in any form, whether prescription or non-prescription, for one week prior to this examination. 

5. If you are on any blood thinners they must be discontinued at least 7 days prior to the biopsy. 

6. Should you for any reason need to cancel this appointment, please let us know as soon as possible. 

Directions following transrectal prostate ultrasound and prostate biopsy. 

1. Check your temperature several times within the next 24 hours.  If your temperature rises above 101 please call the doctor's office immediately, even if this occurs after normal business hours.

2.  Some spotting of blood will occur, and you may notice some bleeding with your urine and stools for a few days.  If there is excessive blood, please call the office. 

3. You will notice a bloody ejaculate for 3 - 4 weeks.  This is to be expected.  Do not be alarmed.
