Colonoscopy - Dr. Iqbal's Miralax Preparation

PREPARATION WITH MIRALAX AND GATORADE 

Please read all enclosed information carefully.  Please bring your insurance card(s), and your copayment or deductible on the day of your procedure.

If you take Coumadin, Warfarin, Plavix have an artificial heart valve, or any allergy to Latex, please call (720)494-3123 for further instructions.

PLEASE STOP TAKING ASPIRIN, COUMADIN, PLAVIX 3 DAYS PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE.

Avoid eating:  Peas, corn, poppy/sesame seeds, raw vegetables, salads, popcorn and other dried seeds or nuts for 1 week prior to your exam.

Please purchase at the grocery store or pharmacy:
Dulcolax Laxative 5 mg tablets.  (You will only be taking 4 tablets).  Make sure that you buy laxative tablets NOT the stool softeners.

Miralax 238gram bottle.

Both of these laxatives are available over the counter.  NO prescriptions are required.

Gatorade sports drink 64oz.  (NO RED, ORANGE OR PURPLE).

If you have diabetes, substitute Crystal Light sugar free drink for Gatorade.

ON THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE,
You will be on a clear liquid diet all day.  NO SOLID FOODS ARE TO BE EATEN!

The preparation is the same for both morning and afternoon appointments.

No dairy products or juices with pulp such as orange or grapefruit juices.

Examples of clear liquids are plain broth (no vegetable or noodles) beef or chicken broth is fine.  Clear juices (white grape or apple), sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade, sodas (no red, orange or purple), plain coffee, tea without creamer, popsicles (no sherbets or fruit bars), plain jello (lemon or lime) and of course water.  No alcoholic beverages.  It is important that you drink as much fluid as you can throughout the day.


At 2:00 pm, take all 4 Ducolax 5mg laxative tablets with a glass of water.

At 5:00 pm, mix together the 238gr bottle of Miralax with the 64oz of Gatorade in a pitcher.  Drink an 8oz glass of solution every 10-15 minutes until gone.  The diarrhea effect usually begins within an hour or two, but may vary.  You may notice some bloating or cramping at the beginning, this will improve once the diarrhea begins.  If you develop nausea or vomiting, take a break from drinking for an hour.  Resume drinking at a slower rate.  Diarrhea usually continues for 1-2 hours after completing the Miralax.  Stay close to a bathroom once you start the prep.  Use non-alcohol wipes to cleanse after each bowel movement.  You may use a barrier cream such as Vaseline, Desitin or A&D ointment for chaffing of the skin.

DAY OF PROCEDURE

If you take medications, including blood pressure medications, you may take them in the morning of the procedure with a small sip of water.  The exceptions are the above listed medications.  You may brush your teeth.  You can have clear liquids up until 4 hours before your procedure.  Please bring your insurance cards, and copayment or any deductible due at time of service.

YOU MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A FRIEND OR RELATIVE TO DRIVE YOU HOME. YOU MAY NOT DRIVE, OR GO HOME BY TAXI OR BUS.  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A DRIVER, YOUR PROCEDURE WILL BE CANCELLED.
