Wound and Scar Care Instructions

Pre Procedure instructions

Stop all products containing aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E and similar products 10 days before the procedure to minimize bleeding and bruising.  Notify Dr. TerKonda if you are taking a blood thinner such as warfarin, coumadin, and plavix.

Wound Care Instructions

1.Clean your incision 3x/day with hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip.  Blot the area dry, and apply any over the counter antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin, Neosporin, etc.).  Stop this after 3-5 days.

2.Permanent sutures are removed in 3-7 days after surgery.  Absorbable sutures dissolve within 7 days, and do not require removal.

3.Dermabond, a tissue adhesive, will occasionally be used.  This is waterproof, and does not require wound care or suture removal. We will determine if you are a candidate for this during the procedure.

4.The incision does not need to be covered with a bandage.

5.If an oral antibiotic is prescribed, take as directed on the bottle until all the pills are gone.

6.It takes 1-2 weeks to get the pathology report on your lesion.  This will be reviewed at your follow up appointment.

Scar Care

It takes a full year for a scar to mature.  These products and procedures are available through our office to minimize your scar.  A certified aesthetician is available for advice.

1.Zinc oxide sunblock:  $34-40

Use sunblock with a t least SPF 20 daily.  Zinc oxide is recommended because it covers the entire ultraviolet spectrum (UVA and UVB).  Intense sun exposure can prolong redness.

2.Silicone Scar Products (Dermatix Ultra, Scarguard, Scarguard Lightener):$35-52.50

Silicone helps to flatten scars, decreases redness, and prevent thickening.  Start after the sutures are removed, and continue for up to 3 months.

3.Vascular Laser Treatments: $350/single treatment, $900/series of 3 treatments

KTP laser treatments are used for scars that are very red or thickened.  The laser collapses the blood vessels in the scar, and the results can be dramatic.  The treatments are quick and performed in the office.

4.Steroid Injections-ask your physician

Kenalog is injected into hypertrophic or keloid scars to flatten and soften the scar.  The medication lasts for one month and can be repeated if necessary.

5.Scar Revision: costs are variable

Surgical scar revision is helpful for mature scars that are unsightly or cause symptoms. We usually wait one year before considering scar revision.
